BRAZILIAN IMMIGRANT CENTER PROTESTS AGAINST RACIST ANTI-IMMIGRANT AMENDMENT SB 2061

BRAZILIAN IMMIGRANT CENTER PROTESTS AGAINST RACIST ANTI-IMMIGRANT AMENDMENT SB 2061
      Today,Tuesday, February 21, 2012, the Brazilian Immigrant Center stood with Centro Presente, Student Immigrant Movement and Metro West Worker Center at the Statehouse steps to protest the new racist anti-immigrant amendments disguised as public safety measures.  Natalicia M. Tracy, Executive Director of the Brazilian Immigrant Center delivered a heartfelt powerful speech noting that while immigrant communities detest driving under the influence and feel greatly for the families, the proposed amendments serve only to criminalize hard working members of the community.

The amendments include among many things:

Requiring e-verify;

Increased penalties for driving without a license;

Requirements that any defendant be reported to ICE (immigration) by the time of arraignment  regardless of whether they are to be found to committed a crime or not;

Requirements restricting the waiver or reduction of court fees to those who can produce a social security number; and

Cutting off any public housing to any person if any member of their family who will live with them is undocumented.
